Horns Up Recap – 1/10/2023

Women’s Basketball

Texas women’s basketball (11-5) played against #23 Kansas (12-2) at home tonight, winning 72-59. I didn’t watch the last game against Oklahoma State in Stillwater, so I didn’t write a full post about it. However, it was clear that they had a pretty significant breakdown on defense, allowing 86 points. They also weren’t great in the game against TCU that I went to, so it wasn’t a surprise to see that Coach Schaefer obviously had them ready to go for this one. The Horns were much better on the defensive side tonight, with 9 steals, 4 blocks, and forcing 21 turnovers. Early on they still showed some signs of the fouling issues (Khadija Faye had to go to the bench very early), but mostly cleaned it up, almost cutting the opponents’ free throws in half from the TCU game. On offense, it was a pretty good showing aside from the 3rd quarter; The team’s shooting was definitely a game changer in this one, going 48% on field goals and 67% on threes. It was also nice to see them overcome that rough stretch in the 3rd, and eventually pull away on the back of Shaylee Gonzales. She came back in and had a monster 4th quarter, and definitely was the player of the game with 26 points (a career high), 3 steals and 3 rebounds. This was a good step back into form for the women, and possibly at the best time with a very challenging month ahead. Next game up is #15 Iowa State at home this Sunday.
